Sir Francis Drake is famous in bowls folklore: before setting sail to confront the Spanish Armada in 1588, he was playing a game of bowls on Plymouth Hoe. On being warned of the approach of the Spanish fleet, Drake is said to have remarked that there was plenty of time to finish the game and still beat the Spaniards. It is unsure whether he won or lost this game of bowls, but he did go on and defeat the Spanish Armada.
The Crown Green Bowls Club has been operating from the Albany Club for over 50 years.
Where we play
For the 2011 season we have entered a team in 2 different leagues.
Home games are played at Spencer Park Tennis & Bowls, Spencer Avenue, Earlsdon, Coventry.
Away venues range from Kenilworth to Bedworth this season - see the fixture list for details.
When we play
We meet at the green at 6pm for a 6.30pm start, and matches last approximately 2 hours.
Then its back to the Albany Club (or the away teams’ club) for food and a drink to celebrate the win!
The Albany Club Bowls team are celebrating the forthcoming bowls season with
a pre-season practice on Sunday 1st April, from 2pm.
